Workmen Compensation Insurance

In Ghana, the Workmen Compensation Law (PNDC Law 187, Act 1987) mandates that employers are liable to pay compensation if an employee sustains personal injury due to an accident arising out of and during the course of employment. The law imposes strict liability on all employers, with the only exception being for those employed in the Armed Forces.

Compensation benefits include:

  1. Death resulting from a work-related accident or occupational disease (excluding natural causes)
  2. Permanent total disability or incapacity
  3. Temporary total disability or incapacity (when off duty due to injury)
  4. Dismemberment or disfigurement from the accident
  5. Full coverage for medical expenses

The Workmen Compensation Law operates on a strict liability basis, meaning no fault needs to be proven. Employees are entitled to benefits even if their own negligence caused the injury.
